Why people look for a Cision alternative
Buyers who leave Cision often cite cost and contract terms. Cision's agreement says "All fees are invoiced annually in advance"2. The fees cannot be cancelled unless your order says otherwise. A Trustpilot reviewer in June 2026 wrote, "they have unreasonable auto renewal policies"5.
The move to CisionOne is another trigger. One Reddit user wrote, "I'm out of there as soon as we can get out"4. Others want a tool where the price is on the page. Cision's pricing page is a form, and an expert reaches out to you1.
Cision still has real strengths. It bundles monitoring, the PR Newswire wire and a large global database. So pick an alternative by the job you need done, not just by price.
The 8 best Cision alternatives
1. Media List
Best for solo publicists, founders and small agencies who pitch US journalists and creators.
Basic costs $99 a month, Professional $399 and Scale $999, with no annual contract.
Media List is a self-serve media database. You can sign up and search the same day, with no demo or sales call. It covers 31,000+ journalists, editors and producers, 22,000+ of them in the US. Every plan also includes 189,000+ YouTube channels and 1.2 million podcasts.
Every contact shows its verification status before you export, and you can filter to verified emails. If an exported email bounces, it is replaced at no cost. Professional adds campaigns with follow-ups and open and click tracking, plus up to 3 seats. Scale adds up to 10 seats and private-label client reports. At full use, it works out to about $0.04 per exported contact.
2. Muck Rack
Best for PR teams that want the deepest US journalist data and will pay yearly for it.
Muck Rack does not publish prices. It says "Pricing depends on a few factors specific to your team including the number of users"6. Vendr's median buyer pays $13,000 a year8, and one buyer reported $4,400 a year for a single seat9.
In Reddit threads, Muck Rack is a common landing spot for people leaving Cision for the database. A Reddit user wrote, "If you're specifically looking for a media database Muck Rack is excellent, it's much better than Cision"27. It also has news monitoring on every tier6. Contracts are annual, and to cancel you "email your Customer Success Manager"7.
Where it beats Media List. Far more journalist and freelancer profiles, monitoring and coverage reports, and pitching from Gmail or Outlook.
3. Meltwater
Best for teams that want monitoring and social listening first and a database second.
Meltwater's own blog says prices start "from $10,000/year for Starter, $25,000/year for Pro, and $130,000/year for Enterprise"10.
Meltwater claims "800,000+ global journalists, bloggers, and media contacts"13. It sells on annual terms with a 12-month minimum11. Its community FAQ says a contract renews unless it is "canceled at least 60 days before the end of the term"12. A Reddit user summed it up this way. "If media monitoring is more important to you, choose Meltwater"26.
Where it beats Media List. Monitoring across news, broadcast, podcasts and social, global contacts, and 24/7 support.
4. Semrush AI PR Toolkit (formerly Prowly)
Best for marketers already in Semrush who want AI-drafted pitches and sending in one login.
Base costs $149 a month, Pro $279 and Business $49914.
Prowly is now part of Semrush. Its homepage says "Prowly is now the Semrush AI PR Toolkit"17. Semrush claims a "database of over 600,000 journalists"16. Exports are tight, though. Base exports 0 contacts a month, Pro 150 and Business 50015. During the 7-day trial, "Viewing and exporting contact information" is turned off14.
At list price, Semrush Pro works out to about $1.86 per exported contact. Media List is about $0.04 at full use.
Where it beats Media List. AI pitch writing, Gmail and Outlook sending, and monitoring on Pro and Business.
5. Agility PR Solutions
Best for comms teams that want a suite like Cision with more hands-on support.
Agility does not publish prices. It says "Our pricing is comparable to both Meltwater and Cision while delivering greater value through unlimited expert support"19.
Agility claims "Access to 1.1M+ media contact and outlet profiles"18. It sells media relations, monitoring, intelligence and social listening as modules. "Our standard billing cycle is annual, but we can accommodate other frequencies as needed"18. One customer on Reddit said the contract auto-renews each year28.
Where it beats Media List. Monitoring, AI writing help, a dedicated account manager and phone support18.
6. JournalistDB
Best for founders on the tightest budget who only need a contact list.
Pro costs $79 a month or $299 a year21.
JournalistDB is the cheapest option here. It claims "142,458 journalists indexed"22. Pro says there are "no daily or monthly limits" on CSV exports21. There is a free tier to browse names, but emails are masked and there is no trial of Pro21. It has no sending tool, so you export to your own email or CRM.
Where it beats Media List. A much lower price, no monthly export cap, and phone numbers on Pro.
7. Reporters.io
Best for a founder who needs a small list for one launch.
Connect costs $35 a month and Professional $85 a month23.
Reporters.io claims "100,000+ journalist profiles"24. Connect allows 200 exported rows a month and Professional 1,00023. "Every exported row counts again, including reporters exported previously"23. Its plans page says "We do not offer a free trial"23.
At full use, Professional is about $0.085 per contact and Connect about $0.175. Media List is about $0.04 at full use, and re-downloads never count again.
Where it beats Media List. A lower entry price when 200 to 1,000 contacts a month is enough.
8. Prezly, to use alongside a database
Best for teams that want a hosted newsroom and a PR CRM.
Essential costs $120 a month billed yearly, or $175 billed monthly25.
Prezly is not a media database. Its plans cover contacts you bring, "Up to 5,000 contacts" on Essential25. It runs newsrooms, press releases, email outreach and coverage tracking. Many teams pair it with a database. You find contacts in Media List, export a CSV, and import it into Prezly.
Where it beats Media List. Branded newsrooms, press release pages, a team CRM and a 14-day trial with no card.
The cheapest alternatives to Cision
If price is the main reason you are leaving, here is how the options line up.
- Under $100 a month. JournalistDB at $299 a year is the cheapest21. Reporters.io starts at $35 a month23. Media List Basic is $99 a month with 2,500 exports.
- $100 to $500 a month. Semrush runs $149 to $499 a month14. Media List Professional is $399 a month with up to 3 seats and campaigns.
- Yearly suites. Meltwater starts from $10,000 a year10. Muck Rack's Vendr median is $13,000 a year8. Agility does not publish a price19.
Cheapest is not always best value. Check how many contacts you can export, whether re-downloads count again, and whether you can see real contacts before you pay.
Cision competitors for larger teams
If you need what Cision does beyond the database, the main Cision competitors are Muck Rack, Meltwater and Agility. All three sell yearly contracts after a demo. Muck Rack often leads on journalist data in buyer threads. Meltwater leads on monitoring. Agility pitches itself on support.
Ask each one for a database-only quote and a full-suite quote. Then compare the renewal terms as well as the first-year price.
What a year costs, two examples
| Buyer | Cision | Media List |
|---|---|---|
| Solo publicist, contacts only | About $3,500 to $6,000 a year in buyer reports2930 | Basic, $1,188 over 12 months |
| 3-person agency, contacts and sending | $15,000 to $40,000 a year for 1 to 5 users, per Vendr3 | Professional with up to 3 seats, $4,788 over 12 months |
Both lines leave out monitoring and distribution. The Media List lines use $99 and $399 a month, paid monthly.
How to switch from Cision
- Check your order form. Cision sets renewal and notice terms on each order, so find your dates first.
- Plan to rebuild your lists. Section 6.4 of Cision's agreement says each party "will delete all data and content to which it no longer has a license"2.
- Test the new tool first. Start a Media List trial before your notice date and search your main beats.
- Rebuild with filters. Filter by beat, outlet, state and media type, then save each list.
