Cision vs Muck Rack (2026), Prices, Data and Which to Choose

The main difference is focus. Muck Rack is database-first, and reviewers rate its US journalist data highly. Cision is a wider suite that adds monitoring and the PR Newswire wire. Neither publishes a price, and both sell yearly contracts after a demo.

Prices and facts checked October 3, 2026. See something wrong? Tell us.

Below we compare the two side by side, then add Meltwater for a 3-way view. At the end there is a cheaper option for small teams. All facts are as of October 2026.

Who each tool fits best

Choose Muck Rack if journalist data comes first

  • Agencies that pitch national, trade and freelance writers every day. One buyer said, "if you can't find someone in Cision they are almost always in Muckrack"6.
  • Solo publicists with steady work who can pay a yearly fee up front for the deepest US data.
  • Startup comms leads who want pitching from Gmail or Outlook and basic news monitoring in one tool.

Choose Cision if you need the whole suite

  • In-house teams that need broad monitoring across print, TV, radio, podcasts and social.
  • Global agencies that pitch in many countries, since Cision claims 225 countries and territories.
  • Brands that send wire releases often and want PR Newswire and the database from one company.

Cision vs Muck Rack vs Meltwater

Many buyers add Meltwater to the shortlist. Here is how the three compare on the points buyers ask about most.

So how big is each one? On their own claims, Meltwater lists the most contacts, then Cision, then Muck Rack. But size is not the same as fit. Reddit users often split the choice by job. "If media monitoring is more important to you, choose Meltwater. If the journalist database is more important, choose Muck Rack"11. Another user wrote, "If you're specifically looking for a media database Muck Rack is excellent, it's much better than Cision"18.

Choose Meltwater if monitoring and social listening matter more than the list. Its Vendr median of $25,800 a year is about double the other two25. Its renewal terms are also strict. A contract renews unless it is "canceled at least 60 days before the end of the term"15.

Cision vs Muck Rack pricing

Neither company posts a price, so buyers compare notes on Reddit. For Cision, one buyer said, "I pay $3500 for the media database. I have two users"6. Others reported about $10,000 for 2 seats with monitoring, and about $23,000 for 5 seats6.

For Muck Rack, one buyer reported "$4,400 USD" for an agency starter plan with 1 seat10. Another reported "$5,750 for 2 seats"10. A freelancer in August 2026 said a rep quoted "$6K-$25K and you have to pay in full for the year"23.

So database-only Cision can start a little lower. Once you add seats and monitoring, the two land close together. Vendr's medians are $12,625 for Cision and $13,000 for Muck Rack59.

Data quality, in buyers' words

Both tools get mixed reviews on data. These quotes are the reviewers' words, not ours.

  • "Excellent database." A TrustRadius reviewer on Cision, January 202624.
  • "Their media database isn't well maintained." A Trustpilot reviewer on Cision, June 202617.
  • "MuckRack is definitely most expensive, but I think it's the most up to date and accurate database." A Reddit user, November 202512.
  • "national and trade ... about 90%. Local reporters maybe closer to 70%." A Reddit user on Muck Rack email hit rates, February 202620.

Platform changes matter too. A Cision user wrote, "The forced switch to Cision One was frustrating and not at all user friendly"21. On Capterra's shared review pool, 77% of Muck Rack reviewers recommend it, against 59% for Cision16.

A cheaper option for small teams

This section is about our own product, Media List. It is a self-serve media database for people who mainly need to find and pitch journalists.

Prices are on the page. Basic is $99 a month, Professional is $399 with up to 3 seats, and Scale is $999 with up to 10 seats. You pay monthly, with no annual contract, and can cancel anytime from your billing page. There is a 3-day trial that costs $0 today with a card or PayPal, and you can export up to 25 contacts.

Media List covers 31,000+ journalists, editors and producers, 22,000+ of them in the US. Every plan also includes 189,000+ YouTube channels and 1.2 million podcasts. Each contact shows its verification status before you export. Professional adds campaigns with follow-ups and open and click tracking. At full use, that is about $0.04 per exported contact.

Choose Media List if you are a solo publicist, founder or small agency that wants US journalists and creators month to month, without a demo. Choose Cision or Muck Rack if you need monitoring, global depth or the largest journalist count.

What a year costs, two examples

BuyerCisionMuck RackMedia List
Solo publicist, contacts onlyAbout $3,500 with up to 2 users6About $4,400 for 1 seat10Basic, $1,188 over 12 months
3-person agency, contacts and sending$15,000 to $40,000 for 1 to 5 users, per Vendr5$10,000 to $25,000 for 1 to 5 users, per Vendr9Professional, $4,788 over 12 months

The solo line assumes one person who builds lists and sends from their own email. The agency line assumes 3 people who share lists and send campaigns, with no monitoring. Cision and Muck Rack quotes vary a lot, so treat these as starting points.

Cheaper alternatives to Muck Rack or Cision?

This is one of the most common questions on Reddit. A freelancer wrote, "I'd want to spend under $300 per month"23. Neither big tool sells at that level, since both bill yearly.

Self-serve tools fill that gap with monthly billing and a price you can see. Check how many contacts you can export, whether a trial shows real contacts, and how you cancel.

Does Muck Rack have a media database?

Yes. The database is the heart of Muck Rack, and many buyers pick it for that reason. Its verified badge goes to journalists with bylines at verified outlets in the last 30 days27. Cision's database is also a core product. It is sold as Journalist Outreach, next to monitoring and the wire1.

Switching between them

  • Leaving Cision. Check your order form for the renewal and notice dates. Section 6.4 of the agreement says each party "will delete all data and content to which it no longer has a license"3, so plan to rebuild lists.
  • Leaving Muck Rack. Cancel by email to your success manager before renewal8. Standard and Premier let you export lists first7.
  • Rebuilding a list anywhere. Start from the beats, outlets and states you pitch most, then add media type filters such as newspaper, TV, podcast or YouTube.
