KALW 91.7 FM is a trailblazing educational and community broadcast service, proudly licensed to the San Francisco Unified School District. As the first FM station west of the Mississippi, it has been on-air since 1941, a remarkable 30 years before the inception of NPR. KALW has a history of innovation, being the first station in the Bay Area to air acclaimed programs like 'Fresh Air', 'This American Life', 'Snap Judgment', and 'The Daily'. It's also recognized as the birthplace of '99 Percent Invisible' and 'Radio Ambulante'.
The station offers unique training programs, such as the Audio Academy, a tuition-free journalism training program, and the Uncuffed radio training program inside San Quentin and Solano State Prisons. KALW's commitment to social justice is reflected in its diverse leadership, staff, and centered voices in on-air reporting.
