During the 2012 Christmas Holidays, we were part of a non-profit working at a Ugandan orphanage. Overwhelmed at the immense need, and thinking about our four adopted daughters, we had to do something. After researching the natural resources of Uganda, we decided on chocolate. On the 31 hour journey home, we created the framework for KYYA, the first bean-to-bar chocolate company in the region. KYYA is from the Greek — KAIA — meaning " pure ". During our first six months, we made ~50 batches of mostly really bad chocolate. Once we figured out what we liked, we sold the first 25 bars to a local coffee shop and KYYA launched.
