Founded in 1973 as a sub-section of the International Stoke Mandeville Games Federation (ISMGF), wheelchair basketball has steadily grown in prominence. Renamed the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation in 1989, it achieved full autonomy by 1993, becoming the sport's global governing body.
