It was launched at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London in January 1996. The prize was born out of the 1991 Booker Prize - where no women were shortlisted for the award. In May 2012, Bailey's took over the sponsorship of the award and for the next four years the award was known as the Baileys Women's Prize for Fiction.
