Sparta Center Church: A Brief History On June 14, 1856, nine people met to establish a church near the center of the recently settled Sparta Township in Kent County, Michigan. The church, in the words of the first church secretary, was established specifically “for the glory of God and the advancement of the Redeemers Kingdom here on earth.” Originally founded as a Free Will Baptist Church, which it remained up into the 1930s, the church has also used other names such as The First Baptist Church of Sparta, Sparta Baptist Church, The
