National Insurance Company Limited, a Wholly-owned Government of India Undertaking is the oldest Public Sector General Insurance Company in India. It was incorporated under the Indian Companies Act, 1882 (at present the Companies Act, 2013) in Kolkata on 5th December, 1906 as a part of the nationalist aspiration for Swaraj. It is registered as a General Insurance Company with the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) under the Insurance Act, 1938 vide registration no. 58.
