Bill Owens' Substack

Bill Owens was born in Northern California and grew up in rural Citrus Heights. After attending college, he spent a year traveling through Europe and did a stint with the Peace Corps, Owens then became a staff photographer for a Livermore newspaper. He became interested in the new suburbs around Livermore that were heavily populated after WWII. Owens photographed the people living in these suburbs and their lifestyles. Owens then published his best-selling book, Suburbia, in 1971. Bill moved to Hayward, where he started brewing beer and opened Buffalo Bill’s Brewery, the first brewpub in America since Prohibition, and invented pumpkin ale. In 2023, Owens published an illustrated dystopian novel, The Delco Years, and an intimate book of poems. Today, Bill travels the world visiting distilleries and breweries.
