Description

Scientific ringing (banding) is a tool for monitoring and observing wild bird populations. This method can only be carried out in a very supervised manner, both from a scientific and a legal point of view. In Belgium, ringing activities are organized by BeBirds, a service of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (RBINS). Each year, 650,000 wild birds are marked through a network of 375 certified collaborators who invest, in a remarkable way, their free time in order to contribute to the progress of knowledge and therefore to the overall effort of wild bird conservation and beyond of the natural heritage. The study of migration routes and strategies is one of the most visible result. All the data collected in Belgium since 1927 can be mapped freely thanks to an online geographical application.
