Founded in 1976, Isthmus underwent a significant transformation during the COVID-19 pandemic, transitioning from a publishing company to a nonprofit with aid from Madison-based Red Card Media. The company, now operating as Isthmus Community Media Inc., returned to monthly print in August 2021, distributing 35,000 high-quality copies throughout the greater Madison area.

Its key differentiators include its commitment to journalistic excellence, community involvement, and its status as a nonprofit. Notably, Isthmus is a member of the Institute for Nonprofit News and Association of Alternative Newsmedia, further cementing its position within the industry.
