Meltwater vs Critical Mention (2026), Prices, Contracts and Fit
Meltwater and Critical Mention are both media monitoring tools, so this is a closer match than most pairs. Meltwater is the larger global suite, with social listening, a big media database and AI built in. Critical Mention is the US broadcast specialist, with TV and radio clips from every local market. The right pick depends on whether your coverage lives on social and global news, or on American TV and radio.

Price, the biggest gap
Meltwater is usually the bigger bill. Vendr's median Meltwater buyer pays $25,800 a year5, against $7,950 for Critical Mention6. Meltwater's own blog starts its indicative ranges at $10,000 a year for Starter3.
Buyer reports show the same pattern. A user who had paid Critical Mention $2,500 a year for three years said Meltwater's "services are normally $20-30K and are offering me annual service for $7500"19. In another thread, Reddit users reported Meltwater deals such as "6900 a year" for monitoring only, and "$43k a year" at the high end20. Meltwater may also charge "a one-time implementation or onboarding charge"2.
Critical Mention's own range on Vendr runs from $5,920 to $15,4006. A 2024 buyer comparing Critical Mention, Meltwater and Muck Rack got "offers between $6K to $8K" from all three19, which shows Meltwater can come down for smaller teams.
Contracts are where Meltwater gets strict
Meltwater publishes its terms in a community FAQ. Contracts are "invoiced annually upfront"7, the standard term is 36 months, and the minimum is 127. Renewal is automatic unless you cancel at least 60 days before the end7, and a rate increase is expected each year7. A Trustpilot reviewer put it bluntly. "Their renewal practice is built around you not paying attention to the contract"17.
Critical Mention does not publish terms. What buyers share points to 12-month deals with an annual uplift6. A Reddit reply said contracts "should have a clause" with 30, 60 or 90 days' notice21. Either way, put the notice date in your calendar on the day you sign.
Critical Mention also offers online news tracking, which it says covers sources in more than 90 languages11.
Monitoring quality, in users' words
Both get praise and complaints. On Meltwater, one user wrote, "Meltwater has a more robust monitoring platform, and their media database has come a LONG way in the last couple years"22. Another disagreed. "Meltwater's media monitoring is a mess. Complicated and clunky"22.
On Critical Mention, praise centres on reports and service. "CM makes easy beautiful reports with data and analysis built in"19. A paying agency's complaints were "Very outdated media list" and "Overall horrible system setup - slow and clunky to use"23. Another noted noise in results, saying it "pulls in so much irrelevant information"23.
Sales and service, a common theme
How each company sells is part of the cost. Meltwater draws the most complaints here. "Meltwaters' sales cycle is PSYCHOTIC! They'll never leave your alone," one user wrote in September 202622. Others still like the product. "I like Meltwater way more than Cision, personally," another said20.
Critical Mention's reviews lean the other way on service. One firm said it has had the same support contact for three years and that "she'll do everything for me"19. A Vendr buyer also got its renewal uplift cut from 8% to about 4.5% by asking6. Whichever you choose, negotiate at renewal, because both companies have moved on price for buyers who pushed back.
Who each tool fits best
Choose Meltwater if you need scale and social
- Global brands. Its 800,000+ contacts and global monitoring suit teams in many countries.
- Teams that live on social. Social listening and Mira AI sit inside the same suite.
- Agencies that want an API or MCP. These come on Meltwater's Enterprise and Agency tiers.
Choose Critical Mention if US broadcast matters most
- Agencies with local TV clients. Clips come from every US Nielsen DMA and stay in unlimited storage.
- Mid-size budgets. By our math, its Vendr median of $7,950 is about a third of Meltwater's $25,800.
- Teams that want simple setup. A G2 comparison snippet says reviewers found it easier to use, set up and administer than Meltwater.
What about the media database?
Some buyers on these two tools also need contacts for pitching. Meltwater says its database has 90+ research analysts and reflects critical changes within 24 to 48 hours10. Critical Mention says requested changes are "updated within 24 hours"12. Reviewers are mixed on both. Some Meltwater users keep it mainly for lists. "I am in Meltwater now and we don't really need the listening but I do need the media lists," one wrote24. For Critical Mention, one user called contacts "hit or miss"21.
A cheaper option for small teams
This part is about our own product, Media List. It is a self-serve media database for the pitching half of the job.
Basic is $99 a month. Professional is $399 with up to 3 seats and campaigns with follow-ups and open and click tracking. Scale is $999 with up to 10 seats and private-label reports. Billing is monthly with no annual contract, and you cancel from the billing page. A 3-day trial costs $0 today with a card or PayPal and lets you export up to 25 contacts.
The database has 31,000+ journalists, editors and producers, 22,000+ of them in the US, plus 189,000+ YouTube channels and 1.2 million podcasts. Every email shows whether it is verified before you export it. Against Meltwater's pricing, that is about $0.04 per exported contact at full use.
Choose Media List if you are a founder, solo publicist or small agency that needs a US list now and does not want a 12 to 36 month contract. Choose Meltwater or Critical Mention if monitoring is the job.
A year of costs, two examples
| Buyer | Meltwater | Critical Mention | Media List |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solo publicist | Offered $7,500 a year in one 2024 report19 | $2,500 a year in the same report19 | Basic, $1,188 over 12 months |
| 3-person agency | Vendr median $25,8005 | Vendr median $7,9506 | Professional, $4,788 over 12 months |
The solo row assumes one person who pitches and reports on their own. The agency row assumes three people sharing lists and sending campaigns. Both rivals include monitoring, so compare only the jobs you need done.
Switching between them
- Leaving Meltwater. Send notice at least 60 days before the end of your term7, and export any reports you need first.
- Leaving Critical Mention. Read your order form for the notice clause, and download the clips you want to keep.
- Rebuilding a pitch list. Start from your top beats and outlets, then add US state and media type filters such as TV, newspaper, podcast or YouTube.
