Most people who search for Meltwater alternatives want a cheaper social listening or monitoring tool. This page is for a smaller group. It is for teams that mainly use Meltwater to find journalists and pitch them, and want a media database without the suite.
Media List is a media database built for finding and pitching journalists. If monitoring is what you use Meltwater for, skip to the section on monitoring buyers below. Prices are quoted from each vendor's pages or from dated buyer reports, as of October 2026.

1. Media List
Best for solo publicists, founders and small agencies that need US journalists and creators, and want to pay by the month.
Price is $99 a month for Basic, $399 for Professional and $999 for Scale, shown on the pricing page with a 3-day trial at $0 today.
Media List covers 31,000+ journalists, editors and producers, 22,000+ of them in the US, plus 189,000+ YouTube channels and 1.2 million in every plan. Every contact shows its verification status before you export, and you can filter to verified emails. Professional adds campaigns with follow-ups and open and click tracking, with up to 3 seats included. There is an MCP server, a read-only API, Zapier (beta) and a Google Sheets add-on.
Where it wins against Meltwater is price, terms and speed. You can buy online today, there is no contract, and a bounced export is replaced at no cost. Exports work out to about $0.04 per exported contact at full use.
2. Muck Rack
Best for agencies and in-house teams that pitch US national and trade press every day and want deep US journalist profiles.
Muck Rack publishes no price. Its pricing page says pricing "depends on a few factors specific to your team including the number of users".5 Buyers on Reddit report about $4,400 to $6,000 a year for one seat, and Vendr reports a median of $13,000 a year.7248
Reddit users often call Muck Rack the better database and Meltwater the better monitoring tool. One user in September 2026 wrote, "If the journalist database is more important, choose Muck Rack."4 It also includes online news monitoring on every tier.5
Where it beats Media List is depth. It has far more journalist and freelancer profiles, and AI list building on its higher tiers.5 The catch is the annual contract. Its terms give no credit for the rest of a paid year if you cancel.6
3. Cision (CisionOne)
Best for larger comms teams that want a database, PR Newswire distribution and monitoring from one vendor.
Cision shows no price. Its pricing page is a request form.9 Vendr reports a median of $12,625 a year, and one Reddit user wrote, "I pay $3500 for the media database. I have two users."1314
Cision claims "over 500,000 media profiles across 225 countries and territories".11 Its master agreement says fees are "invoiced annually in advance" and are "non-cancellable" unless stated otherwise on an order. It also says that at the end of a contract "each party will delete all data and content to which it no longer has a license".10
Where it beats Media List is global depth, phone numbers on profiles, wire distribution and monitoring across print, broadcast and podcasts.12 If you leave Meltwater for Cision, plan for another annual contract.
4. Agility PR Solutions
Best for teams that want a full PR suite with a dedicated account manager and phone support, at a price set by a sales call.
Agility publishes no price. Its plans page invites you to "Speak to an Expert", and Agility says its pricing is "comparable to both Meltwater and Cision".1516
Agility claims "1.1M+ media contact and outlet profiles".17 Its modules are media relations, monitoring, media intelligence and social listening, sold alone or together.15 That makes it a real like-for-like Meltwater alternative if you want to keep monitoring.
Where it beats Media List is monitoring, social listening, AI pitch writing and phone support. It is the closest swap for a team that wants to keep a full suite.
5. Semrush AI PR Toolkit (formerly Prowly)
Best for marketers already on Semrush who want AI pitch drafts, sending from Gmail or Outlook, and light monitoring in one login.
Semrush publishes its prices. Base is $149, Pro is $279 and Business is $499 a month.18
Semrush describes a "database of over 600,000 journalists".20 The export limits are tight. Base exports 0 contacts a month, Pro exports 150 and Business exports 500.19 During the 7-day trial, viewing and exporting contact information is turned off.18
Where it beats Media List is AI writing, Gmail and Outlook sending, and monitoring of news, blogs and YouTube on Pro and up.22 Where Media List wins is exports. Basic at $99 exports 2,500 contacts a month.
If you mainly use Meltwater for monitoring
Be honest about what you use. If your team lives in Meltwater's alerts, dashboards and social listening, a media database will not replace it.
For monitoring-first buyers, the better fits on this list are the suites. Cision covers print, online, broadcast, podcasts and social.12 Agility sells monitoring and social listening as modules.15 Muck Rack includes online news monitoring on every tier and sells print, broadcast and social as add-ons.5 Semrush adds monitoring on its Pro and Business plans.22
Some teams split the job. They keep a monitoring tool and move the media list to a cheaper database. One Reddit user summed up that view in January 2026. "I am in Meltwater now and we don't really need the listening but I do need the media lists."21
How to pick
- Pick Media List if your budget is under a few hundred dollars a month and you pitch US press, YouTubers and podcasters.
- Pick Muck Rack if journalist depth is worth an annual contract of several thousand dollars or more to you.
- Pick Cision if you also send press releases on PR Newswire and want monitoring from the same vendor.
- Pick Agility if you want a full suite with phone support and you are happy to buy through sales.
- Pick Semrush if you already pay for Semrush and need AI drafting more than exports.
Before you leave Meltwater
Check your renewal date first. Meltwater's renewal FAQ says the agreement renews automatically unless you cancel "at least 60 days before the end of the term".2 Its FAQ also says to expect a rate increase at each renewal.2
Start your trial of any replacement before that 60-day line, so you can compare the reporters you really pitch. In Media List, rebuild each list with filters for beat, outlet, US state and media type, then export it or pitch it from a campaign.
